The Mission of the Illinois Women’s Military and Civilian Memorial
is to make visible the contribution of Illinois Women,
both military and civilian, who served with
and in support of the armed services.
A significant part of this project is to establish a registry of current and former Illinois women who served their country from the time of the Civil War to the present. Illinois historical records about these women are nearly nonexistent. Over 40,000 Illinois women have enlisted in the Armed Forces from World War II to the present. Many more women veterans have moved here and now call Illinois home. The number of women who served in a civilian capacity is unknown
Illinois military women served in many jobs such as aviation, medical, supply, communication and administration. They have been stationed in all parts of the world.
Illinois women volunteered and joined humanitarian organizations and went to hostile fire zones in support of our armed forces. They were with the American Red Cross, USO, USAID, and special services. These women are not called veterans, but they have endured and experienced war first hand.
The "Illinois' Own" registry will be the foundation of a historical archive that currently does not exist.
